Oppenhoff advises EIC Fund on EUR 53 million Series B financing round of Infinite Roots
Oppenhoff has once again comprehensively advised the EIC Fund on its German investments. This time, the EIC Fund invested together with Dr. Hans Riegel Holding GmbH (one of the two shareholder holding companies of the Haribo Group) and REWE in the Hamburg biotech start-up Infinite Roots. The investment was in the form of an equity investment under the "Horizon Europe Programme" as part of a second closing of the Series B financing round.
Infinite Roots (formerly Mushlabs) uses a patented technology to produce the next generation of sustainable food and meat substitutes from the roots of fungi, known as mycelia, by means of fermentation. The Series B financing round had a total volume of 53.2 million euros, making it the largest investment in mycelium technology in Europe to date.
The EIC Fund is the special fund of the European Innovation Council (EIC) and thus the central investment vehicle of the European Commission. It is used to implement the European Commission's EIC Accelerator Programme, which supports innovative and sustainable European growth companies. The EIC was founded in the context of the pilot project "Horizon 2020 - the Framework Programme for Research and Innovation" and was successfully continued in 2021 with the launch of the "Horizon Europe Programme". With a term from 2021 to 2027 and a total budget of up to EUR 95.5 billion, it is one of the largest funding programmes for research and innovation worldwide. In 2022, the EIC Fund was the largest European deeptech VC fund with 71 investments. Oppenhoff has regularly advised the EIC Fund on its investments in German start-ups since 2021.
The Oppenhoff team, jointly led by Dr. Peter Etzbach and Dr. Carolin Roßkothen (both Corporate / M&A), comprised Dr. Maike Mestmäcker (Corporate), Dr. Patric Mau (IP), Dr. Johannes Kaesbach, Fatoumata Kaba (both Labour Law), Marvin Rochner (Real Estate), Jan Tobias Kollakowski, Dr. Axel Grätz (both IT&C) and Dr. Carsten Bormann (Regulatory).
