Newsflash: lobby register has gone "live" on 1 January 2022
The German Lobby Register Act (Lobbyregistergesetz - LobbyRG) came into force at the beginning of 2022. Since 1 January 2022, it has been possible to register on the website of the German Bundestag, as the registration office, and to make entries in the lobby register.
The aim of the Act is to create more transparency. All lobbyists vis-à-vis the Bundestag and the Federal Government must register without undue delay. According to the Act, lobbying activities subject to a registration obligation are "any contact for the purpose of directly or indirectly influencing the decision-making process”.
Lobbyists now have until the end of February 2022 to register by entering the required register content. Anyone who, despite an existing obligation, fails to register or makes incorrect, incomplete or belated entries commits an administrative offence. Violations can be sanctioned with a fine of up to 50,000 euros or lead to a note being recorded in the lobby register, as well as other restrictions such as access bans. Further information can be found in our Newsletter.
The registration office at the German Bundestag has published a manual on registration in the lobby register on its website. Further information on the registration process and help with the lobby register can be found here.
