ASEAN Desk

Oppenhoff’s ASEAN Desk is committed to providing multinational companies, family businesses, financial sponsors and start-ups from a broad range of industries and sectors as well as government entities and development agencies with the exceptional client services they need in executing their international growth strategies – both for incoming and outgoing investments.

ASEAN Inbound

ASEAN offers opportunities for businesses to expand and people to thrive. However, it can be difficult for some to navigate the region’s diverse economies, legal systems, cultures and languages. Oppenhoff has an extensive and established network across ASEAN and is well placed to support businesses looking to capture growth opportunities in the Asia Pacific region. Together with our trusted local partners we provide businesses with the insights and expertise they need to build and expand their presence in the region’s markets.

ASEAN Outbound

At the same time, with our deep understanding of the differing cultural, business and legal perspectives, we are ideally able to support clients from the ASEAN region on their ventures into Germany.

Amongst others, we frequently act for clients from the region investing in businesses in Germany. In particular, we are able to advise on:

  • establishing the most appropriate legal structures for businesses;
  • international tax issues and tax structuring advice;
  • corporate restructurings, mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and divestments;
  • employment obligations and agreements;
  • compliance obligations under German and EU law;
  • commercial agreements including lease, franchise, distribution, supply and service agreements;
  • protection and licensing of intellectual property;
  • commercial and residential property transactions; and
  • whether any regulatory approvals are required for a particular transaction and if so, obtaining those approvals.

ASEAN as an important trade partner

The Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) is an intergovernmental organization comprising ten countries in Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Its aim is to promote cooperation between the member states and facilitate economic, political and socio-cultural integration within the region and with other Asian countries.

As a region with abundant natural resources, ASEAN is experiencing a dynamic growth of its economic community. It is expected to be the fourth largest economy in the world by 2030. The strong growth in the ASEAN region has led to increased cross-border trade and transactions. This growth not only offers increased economic integration, but also provides new investment opportunities.

The European Union (EU) has been a strong partner of ASEAN for many years now. Of the 28 members within the EU, Germany has and is still playing a crucial role in this region-to-region partnership.

Established Southeast Asia team

You will have access to an experienced, multilingual team with deep industry and market insights in the German speaking countries and beyond. As a firm which has always prospered from its excellence in cross-border work for its domestic and international clients, we are well positioned to assist both clients from Southeast Asia that wish to do business in Germany, and players in the domestic market which seek to expand into, or diversify their activities across, Asia Pacific through an engagement in the ASEAN region.

Our ASEAN Desk is made up of experts from across the firm who have deep knowledge in Southeast Asia’s jurisdictions and whose background and understanding of local legal environments enable them to become the trusted advisor to companies doing business in this region. Oppenhoff’s ASEAN Desk will draw upon the extensive resources of the firm’s full service offerings.

The ASEAN Desk is headed by Dr Markus Rasner who in addition to his role at Oppenhoff serves as Honorary Consul of the Republic of Singapore in Frankfurt am Main.
